Ballet at the heart, every style around it
Classical ballet at all levels, including pointe, lyrical and modern ballet, sits at the center of our Dance Studio, alongside modern dance, jazz, hip-hop, tap, and a ballroom program in Standard and Latin styles.
Ballet starts from age 3 and continues through adult classes; modern dance starts from age 6. Our dancers perform in many concerts every year, and classical ballet and modern dance can also be taken as audition preparation for Mark Twain and Bay Academy junior high schools and LaGuardia High School.
Every year more than 50 Shostakovich School students are accepted to schools for the gifted and talented.

Pointe (toe-shoe) classes are for advanced students by teacher recommendation. Private dance lessons are available by appointment.
Performing groups: what to know
Consistent attendance matters for every dancer and for the whole group.
Rehearsal attendanceNo more than 2 absences per 3-month session. The last rehearsal before a show can’t be missed without the instructor’s permission.
CostumesFamilies buy costumes and accessories for each number. The initial deposit is due in September; costumes are ordered only after deposits arrive.
Recital feeA yearly, non-refundable fee covers production, rehearsals and insurance — and tickets to your child’s shows.
Acrobatic elementsModern dance choreography may include acrobatics. Parents give (optional) consent on the registration form.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age can my child start ballet?
Ballet starts at age 3, with Pre-Ballet and Ballet classes for ages 4–6. Modern dance starts at age 6. We also have classes for teens and adults.
Which location offers which classes?
Ballet for ages 4–6 and 7–9 runs Tuesday to Thursday at Bath Avenue, with Saturday modern dance there too. Classical ballet and pointe are taught at Avenue X and Brighton Beach, and modern/jazz/hip-hop at Brighton Beach on Tuesdays and Fridays. See the full schedule.
Do dancers perform?
Yes. Our dancers take part in many concerts and in the school’s shows. Group-class families buy costumes for each number their child performs in (an initial deposit is due in September), and an annual recital fee covers production costs and tickets to your child’s performances.
Is there an attendance rule for performance groups?
Yes. Dancers may miss no more than 2 rehearsals in any 3-month session, and may not miss the last rehearsal before a performance unless the instructor excuses them. More than 2 absences may mean sitting out the upcoming show.
Do you prepare dancers for specialized schools?
Yes. Classical ballet and modern dance can be taken as preparation for the gifted-and-talented auditions at Mark Twain and Bay Academy junior high schools and LaGuardia High School.
